Olympic Peninsula Fungi Festival
Introduction to Dyeing with Mushrooms & Lichens

October 15th

$65

Clallam County Fairgrounds, Port Angelas WA

Explore the many colors of Kingdom Fungi as we discuss the biology & conservation of dye specimens, historical uses of natural dye, and the logistics to get started dyeing at home! Participants will learn how to prepare fibers to dye, extract color from mushrooms and lichens, and modify colors with pH changes and exposure to iron (ferrous sulfate). We will make color swatch cards with a variety of mushroom & lichen dyed wool yarns, practice color modification steps, make test bundles with pre-mordanted wool, and dye a silk handkerchief to take home.

In this workshop we will learn to make thickened mordants and dye pastes, called lakes, with natural materials that have been gathered locally and globally. We will learn how to apply dye to prepared materials as if painting a canvas to achieve bold contrasts and patterns. We will discuss foraging ethics and techniques while learning about the natural history of gathered items. Each participant will leave with a handprinted silk scarf, cotton bandana, and stack of color swatches of their own making.
